Sinking ships is played with 2 pieces. printout, 2 pencils and perhaps a large book which can be placed in the middle so that the opponent cannot see your ships. It is my experience that children from 6-8 years old can play Sink Battleships.
If you want to think about alternative maths teaching, play a game of Sinking Ships, because both adults and children will be trained in coordinate systems, strategy and patience in this game on paper.
